Transition to iban and bic belarusbank. New bank accounts and codes: What do Belarusians need to know? About working with settlement documents

IBAN (International Bank Account Number) is the bank account number in accordance with the international standard ISO 13616:2007. It is also called the IBAN code (IBAN code).

The IBAN code officially appeared in 2007. Its appearance was originally intended to standardize settlements between banks in the European Union (EC).

The IBAN code is used not only in the EU, but also in other countries of the world. Using bank account coding recommendations speeds up and reduces the cost of interbank payments.

From July 4, 2017, through the efforts of the National Bank of the Republic of Belarus, Belarus joins the international numbering of accounts and abandons its old one.

Each country independently determines the length of the IBAN code. The maximum possible length is 34 characters. In Belarus, the National Bank has established IBAN accounts with a length of 28 characters.

The IBAN structure looks like this:

  • the first two letters indicate the state where the account is located. For Belarus it is BY;
  • the next two digits are the IBAN check number for checking the correctness of the account;
  • the remaining characters encoded the sign of the bank and the number of the bank account.

For example, until July 4, 2017, the Inspectorate for the Tax Ministry for the Zavodskoy district of Minsk had an account number 3602911010004 in Belarusbank. Bank code: 153001795.

After the transition to the new numbering, the account will look like this.

Switched to a new account format - International bank account number or IBAN. The 13-digit numeric number has been replaced with a 28-digit alphanumeric

Legal and individuals in banks and other financial institutions have changed their numbers. Other bank details have not changed. This also did not affect the contents of the accounts and the rules for conducting operations.

When switching to IBAN, the numbers were changed:

  • current, settlement and correspondent accounts;
  • charitable accounts;
  • deposit accounts (deposits);
  • special accounts for accounting for funds for certain types of settlements (with banks, customers);
  • other accounts, incl. temporary.

Producers of all transfer operations were the banks-account holders. Clients only needed to find out their new numbers and make changes to the details.

There were no significant changes for individuals. Those who receive or send money transfers needed to know the new account numbers.

What does an IBAN account look like and what does it mean?

New IBAN accounts are written in the following format:

AABB CCC DDDD EEEEE EEEEE EEEEE EEEEE.

The real IBAN account of a Belarusian organization looks like this:

BY20 OLMP 3135 0000 0010 0000 0933.

Each group of characters in this number has its own strictly defined meaning:

  • The first two digits of the first block are the country code of the bank that placed the account. In our case - BY.
  • The other two digits of the first block are control. Calculated by special algorithms, they are used to check the rest of the numbers.
  • The next, 2nd block is related to the bank that opened the account.
  • 3 block of numbers contains the number of the balance account, according to the classification of accounts in accordance with approved standards accounting banks.
  • The remaining four blocks of numbers constitute the own account of the person who placed the funds in the bank. This is an individual number assigned by the bank.

The division into 4-digit blocks is only for convenience of explanation. When entering an IBAN account in payment and other documents, spaces are not allowed.

What is the point of switching to IBAN?

Let's try, without going into technical details, to understand the prerequisites and prospects for innovation:

One of the main reasons for the transition to a new account format is the increase in the speed and accuracy of transactions.

Many people remember how a few years ago payments at the speed of "today - for tomorrow" were considered the norm. All operations took place with the participation of a person, information was typed on computers, printed on paper, re-entered into a computer system, which explained the low speed and accuracy. With the introduction of remote access technologies, speed has increased, but completely manual labor and delays have not disappeared.

Let us also pay attention to the fact that the speed of making payments reduces the need for working capital for an enterprise. The money received quickly from the buyer is also quickly transferred to the supplier.

Another well-known problem with human-machine transfers was the erroneous transfer of funds to the “wrong account”. In most cases, everything was corrected after a written appeal to the bank, but the speed and confidence in the system were not increased.

The new structure of accounts reduces the described risks, makes it possible to check the correctness of the number before making a transaction.

The next reason for changing the standard was the desire to make it as easy as possible for foreign investment to enter the country. A very relevant topic for today's Belarus.

The speed and accuracy of operations is increased:

  1. Through the introduction of technologies that work without human intervention. This possibility is provided by "Straight-through processing" of data (straight-through processing, STP).
  2. By joining existing global payment systems. The most important of these prospects, the National Bank calls the registration of all accounts of the Republic in the company SWIFT

Both in the first and in the second cases, new software is required that does not work with old banking standards, including 13-digit numbered accounts.

The new system is especially advantageous:

  • In the short term - banks. Due to the acceleration of work and increase its reliability.
  • Enterprises that constantly work with counterparties in the European Union and other countries that have adopted IBAN.
  • Organizations hoping for foreign investment. Not only because payments to them will become easier and faster, but also because the system cash flow become clearer to foreigners.

How to find out the IBAN account number?

For permanently operating organizations, such a question cannot arise. Their accounting department received notification of new details in advance. But individuals and maybe some entrepreneurs who do not conduct regular activities may not know their account number in IBAN format.

However, this is easily fixable. If it is possible to log into the Internet bank or mobile bank, then IBAN will become visible after authorization in your personal account.

If there is no remote access to the account, then the consultation will have to be received on the website or by phone. Then you will need to come to the bank for new details.

The numbers of other people's accounts, for transfers and payments, should be checked with the owners of these accounts.

The downside of international transfers with your bank

When you send or receive an international wire with your bank, you might lose money on a bad exchange rate and pay hidden fees as a result. That's because the banks still use an old system to exchange money. We recommend you use TransferWise , which is usually much cheaper. With their smart technology:

  • You get a great exchange rate and a low, upfront fee every time.
  • You move your money as fast as the banks, and often faster – some currencies go through in minutes.

UPDATED:
At the moment, the "IBAN Calculator" service is not available on the official website of the National Bank of the Republic of Belarus. Here is a link to all the main documents on the transition to IBAN and BIC.

To find out your new account number (IBAN), you need to contact your bank. If you have accounts opened in several banks, then the IBAN number corresponding to a particular account can be obtained from the bank where the account is opened. According to the international standard, only the account holder's bank has the exclusive right to issue an account number in the IBAN format.

The National Bank of the Republic of Belarus posted on its official website the service "IBAN Calculator" BelTA informs with reference to the information and public relations department of the National Bank.

The service allows you to determine the number of the current (settlement) bank account of the counterparty online ( legal entity, individual entrepreneur, a notary and an individual lawyer) in IBAN format.

To determine the current (settlement) bank account number in IBAN format, enter the 9-digit bank code in the service menu or select its name, select the account currency and indicate the old account number (13 characters). After entering the data, the corresponding account values in the IBAN and BIC format will be displayed in the dialog box.

The service also provides the opportunity batch processing.

According to the National Bank, the regulator's website also contains up-to-date "questions and answers" for legal entities and individuals on the transfer of bank accounts to the IBAN and BIC formats. The bank recommends that for all questions regarding the transition to IBAN and BIC, as well as the procedure for opening and using them in settlements, contact the servicing bank.

As reported, from July 4, 2017, Belarusian banks will accept for execution only those payment instructions that contain new account numbers (IBAN) and new bank identification codes (BIC). At the same time, IBAN and BIC will be used both for settlements within the country and for international settlements.

The introduction of IBAN and BIC into the practice of cashless settlements in Belarus and cross-border settlements will increase the reliability of transactions, speed up the processing of payments and reduce costs during their execution, and eliminate the possibility of ambiguous identification of the settlement participant.

The decision on the transition of Belarusian banks to the use of IBAN and BIC for non-cash payments was made in 2015 as part of the implementation of the Action Plan for the implementation of the methodology of the ISO 20022 standard " Financial services. Universal Financial Industry Message Scheme" in payment system Republic of Belarus for 2014-2017.

This is the very first and most important verification step that we perform.
The check characters include two characters located at positions 3 and 4 in the IBAN.
Symbols are calculated based on the MOD97 algorithm and allow the first validation of the IBAN number.
This check is supported in all 116 countries.

If an error occurs at this stage, we do not perform further verification, because. IBAN is known to be incorrect.

IBAN support in the country

Our system automatically checks if the IBAN can be used in the country specified in the code.
If an error occurs, the user will see a message stating that the IBAN is not used in the country.

This can only happen if you are using low quality software.

IBAN Length

Checking the length of the IBAN code is the third step in checking the code you entered.
Each of the 116 countries has its own IBAN code length.

Possible test results:

IBAN length is correct for UK
In the country ***COUNTRY*** IBAN includes **N** characters

If the International Bank Account Number is different, then it is considered incorrect.

Account Number Checksum (BBAN)

Any IBAN code includes an internal BBAN account number (Main Bank Account Number).
In some countries, additional characters are used to verify the correctness of the BBAN.
Each country uses its own algorithm, and it may differ even for different bank branches.

  • United Kingdom (UK) uses 3 different algorithms: MOD10 , MOD11 and DBLAL with 39 metrics. So we have over 100 variations
  • Holland (NL) uses the MOD11 algorithm with different parameters to check the account number. France (FR) uses MOD97 with various options
  • Germany (DE) uses a complex structure based on 143 algorithms and parameters: MOD10, MOD11, MOD7, etc.
  • Italy (IT) uses a modified MOD10 algorithm to validate internal bank accounts
  • Sweden (SE) uses 5 different algorithms: MOD11 and MOD10 with different parameters
After completing all the verification steps, the system will send one of the following results:

Correct account number checksum- You can use the number as correct.

Incorrect account number checksum- You can't use the number. Most likely it contains an error.

Account number does not support verification- Many countries and banks do not support account number verification. In this case, you should use check characters to evaluate the IBAN.

Currently, 48 countries support checking BBAN and internal account number using verification characters.

IBAN format and structure

In the second step, we check the International Bank Account Number structure.
We know all the rules and requirements in each of the countries that govern the use of IBAN.
This check can be useful if your selected country does not use check characters.

This check can have the following results:

Correct IBAN format and structure!

Wrong IBAN format and structure!

Formatting

Our algorithm allows you to determine the IBAN formats in all 116 countries.

When checking the number format, we take into account:

  • Bank code position- allows you to determine the correct location of the bank identifier
  • Branch code position- Branch code is not used in all countries. We check for 58 countries
  • Check character position- Not available in all countries. We check for 58 countries
Structure

The structure check includes checking the location of special characters in different parts of the IBAN.
Structure validation is carried out for 116 countries.

During structure validation, we determine:

  • Bank code contains only letters, only numbers, letters and numbers
  • Branch code contains only letters, only numbers, letters and numbers
  • Internal account number contains only letters, only numbers, letters and numbers
